About Us

Susan Luong is the founder of Queen's Best Stumpy Dog Rescue and proud mama to Wally, Eva, Angel Oliver, and Panda Bear. She and her husband Mike first brought Wally into their lives in 2008, adopted Oliver in 2010, adopted Eva in 2012, and Panda Bear in 2018. Before starting the rescue at the end of 2013, she was a volunteer at her local animal shelter, member of the Hollywood Dog Obedience Club, pet sitter/dog walker, and an independent rescuer. During her downtime, she enjoys spending time with her family pack, hiking, anything food related (eating, cooking, watching cooking shows) and live music.

Why was QBSDR started?
I wanted to make a difference.  My life revolved around animals and I’ve always considered them furry members of the family. One of my earliest memories is of therapy dogs visiting my hospital room at CHLA, where I was battling juvenile Polymyositis. It was then that I discovered the power of animals and their therapeutic abilities. The more I experienced with dogs and learned about the rescue world, shelter animals, and the reasons they’re given up, the more I was drawn to help those who needed the most help, the ones being overlooked due to medical issues and behavioral issues. I wanted to make a bigger impact on dogs in need by educating the public about homeless dogs, the importance of spaying/neutering, and the beauty of bonding through activities like training, while focusing on a breed I’m incredibly passionate about.

Like many other like minded teens, Mike’s obsession with corgis started with S1E2 of Cowboy Bebop. And like many at that age, concepts of animal welfare were beyond reach. 3 corgis, 15 years, and many lessons later, Mike now runs back office operations for Queen’s Best Stumpy Dog rescue. During his free time he enjoys food, gaming, and sleep (usually in that order). His days are spent holed up in the office doing corporate contract accounting at one of the major Hollywood studios.

Julia grew up in Texas with larger family dogs, but didn’t become aware (and let’s be honest, obsessed with) corgis until her now husband showed her the infamous viral “corgi flop” video back in 2010. In fact, in 2012, when planning their wedding, the only thing on the wedding registry was a request for donations to their corgi fund!

Five months later, they adopted a corgi they named Danger from a friend-of-a-friend that was moving and couldn’t take his dog. When Danger suddenly passed two years later and the house was much too quiet, she began researching local corgi rescues. During that search she found QBSDR and like most corgi-obsessed people began stalking their pages trying to find a new stumper to love.

In May 2015, they welcomed the sweetest, fluffiest tricolor girl, Bailey, into their hearts and home. A year later, after many road trips and shenanigans as an only dog, Bailey became a sisfur to a handsome, but troubled permanent foster brofur named Cookie Monster.

Julia now lives in the SF Bay Area and continues to volunteer her time as a board member while also managing QBSDR’s social media, emails, website, and NorCal Stumpy Squad volunteers and events.

Karen's obsession with corgis began as a child, pouring over dog breed books seeking the 'perfect dog breed.' Corgis landed on top of the list with their propensity for herding, intellect, and loyalty. Karen leapt at the opportunity to pup-sit her first corgi, ever, Mocha for almost a year. He taught Karen that 1) corgis are stubborn AF and 2) they are the goofiest doggos, ever.

Fast-forward to Karen's roommates adopting their corgi, Danger, and his bigger-than-life personality. After Danger crossed the rainbow bridge, Karen's wonderful roommates went in search of a corgi rescue and landed on QBSDR. QBDSR's mission to specialize in special needs corgis is brought to life by its equally amazing founder, Susan. Under Susan's guidance, Karen fostered three corgi loaves: Savannah, Dixie, and Lucy. Convinced that Karen was destined to be a perpetual foster-mom-for-life, Sam (pictured under her armpit--Sam's favorite "pet me, now" spot) taught Karen otherwise with his soul-scanning stare.

As a former volunteer coordinator for QBSDR and now a board member, Karen is both Sam's furever mom and an advocate for special needs corgis.

Vu began his love for the low riders by following every corgi account on Instagram he could find, but one corgi stood out, that guy was QBSDR’s Super Rotti. Following Rotti’s inspirational story of dealing with IVDD, learning to use his wheels and powering through to be able to walk and run on his own again, Vu had to meet this incredible little warrior.

That meet up was the beginning of Vu’s introduction to volunteering at QBSDR Ranch where the corgis welcomed him in to be part of the pack. As a weekly volunteer for over 4 years now, Vu spends his Sundays helping with the upkeep of the rescue, walking the dogs, grooming, supervising of playtime, and participating in fundraising events when available.
